Week 4 starts tonight.

Monticello visits Liberty on Thursday, October 1, at 6:30 PM at Liberty Central High School. Both teams enter 0-4. Before Friday’s larger slate begins, one of them has a chance to give October a different feel.

For Monticello, the first step is an offensive response

The Panthers have been shut out in each of their first four games: Burke Catholic, FDR, Goshen and Wallkill. Last week’s 33-0 loss at Wallkill left Monticello still searching for its first points and first win.

Tonight gives the Panthers a different matchup. Monticello has won the last four meetings with Liberty in KOT845’s series ledger, but those results will not put points on the board tonight. Sustaining drives, protecting the football and finishing a scoring opportunity would give them something tangible to build on. Poughkeepsie is next on the schedule; a win here would also open a realistic path to improving on last season’s one-win finish. That is why this is more than a Thursday opener for Monticello.

Liberty needs the same change in direction

The Redhawks enter after a 40-0 loss to Red Hook. A home game against another winless team is an opportunity, but it comes with its own pressure: somebody has to turn that opportunity into a result.

This game matters beyond where either team sits in the rankings. A first win changes the next week of practice. It gives players a reason to believe their work is producing something.

Tonight’s game opens a 21-game Week 4 board

The current slate has one Thursday game, 13 Friday games and seven Saturday games. Friday brings Middletown at Pine Bush, Monroe-Woodbury at Newburgh, Washingtonville at unbeaten Goshen, Cornwall at Minisink Valley and Dover at Highland among the week’s major tests.
