65 Years in the Making: Middletown Completes Its First Unbeaten Regular Season Since 1961

Middletown’s 31–0 win at Kingston seals a 9–0 regular season, ends a 65-year wait and adds the Middies to Section IX Class AA’s unbeaten history.

For the first time since 1961, Middletown has finished a football regular season without a loss.

The Middies defeated Kingston 31–0 Friday night to complete a 9-0 regular season, giving the 2026 team a place beside one of the program’s longest-standing benchmarks. Coach Tim Strenfel’s team also finished 5-0 in Section IX Class AA league play.

Middletown had already secured the No. 1 seed before the trip to Kingston. The finale gave the Middies a 65-year program milestone to take into the playoffs.

The route to 9-0 included different kinds of tests. Middletown edged Cornwall 22-21 and beat Monroe-Woodbury 50-12. The one-point result against Cornwall was as necessary to keeping the record perfect as the decisive win over the Crusaders. By the time the Middies reached Kingston, eight victories had put them within one game of the milestone.

The last Middletown team to finish unbeaten closed its season on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 23, 1961. John Whitehead’s Middies beat Port Jervis 19-6 at Wilson Field to finish 8-0. The next day’s Kingston Daily Freeman put the crowd at 7,500 to 8,000.

That team outscored its opponents 232-29, a 203-point margin across eight games. Its defense allowed fewer than four points per game. Middletown went 4-0 in the DUSO league, and the newspaper identified the championship as the program’s first DUSO title since 1942.

Even in 1961, a perfect Middletown season required a long look backward. The Freeman described that team as the school’s first to finish perfect since 1917. Whitehead’s group ended a 44-year wait; the 2026 Middies have now ended a longer one.

The seasons belong to different competitive eras. The 1961 team’s 8-0 record covered its entire season in the DUSO era. This Middletown team has completed the regular season, with the Class AA playoffs still to come. Its place in program history is established; its final record remains to be written.

A KOT845 review of Section Nine’s historical scoreboard archives found 16 previous unbeaten Class AA regular seasons from 1996, when the classification began, through 2025. Middletown is the fourth program to reach that mark, and its 2026 season is the 17th.

Monroe-Woodbury accounted for 11 of those seasons, including seven in a row from 2004 through 2010. Newburgh had three, in 1999, 2002 and 2019. Minisink Valley did it twice, in 2007 and 2008.

The most recent Section IX Class AA team to complete an unbeaten regular season before Middletown was Newburgh Free Academy in 2019. The Goldbacks went 7-0 before Monroe-Woodbury beat them 20-16 in the sectional semifinals. Newburgh finished 7-1, its unbeaten run ending before the championship game.

For an example of a Class AA team that carried perfection all the way through, look to Monroe-Woodbury in 2005. The Crusaders finished 12-0 and defeated Webster Thomas 32-10 for the state championship.

Across Section IX, Cornwall supplied another modern example in a different classification. The Dragons finished 12-0 in both 2018 and 2019, winning consecutive Class A state championships. Cornwall’s accomplishments show what unbeaten football has looked like elsewhere in the section, though those Class A seasons belong outside the Class AA tally.

The 2026 Middies will enter the Class AA playoffs as the No. 1 seed, with the chance to build on a regular season that has already placed them in rare company.

For now, the regular-season record is complete. Nine games, nine wins, and a Middletown achievement that had been waiting since 1961.
