The Morning After: Week 2 Drew a Line Between the Unbeatens and Everyone Chasing

Middletown, Beacon, Goshen and Highland reached 3–0, Cornwall erupted for 49, Newburgh kept rolling and Week 3 now brings Port Jervis–Middletown, Cornwall–Newburgh and Monroe-Woodbury–Minisink.

Three weeks of football are enough to stop speaking entirely in hypotheticals.

Week 2 gave Section IX a group of teams with real early-season résumés, a group that finally broke through and a group suddenly facing serious urgency.

Middletown, Beacon, Goshen and Highland are 3–0.

Cornwall finally exploded offensively.

Newburgh has answered its opening loss with two dominant wins.

Port Jervis has won two straight.

Monroe-Woodbury is 0–3.

Minisink Valley is 1–2 and has scored three points over the last two weeks.

This is The Morning After — what Week 2 told us and what matters next.

Middletown is 3–0 because the defense keeps traveling

Middletown 27, Minisink Valley 0.

The Middies have now won three different types of games.

They opened by shutting out Arlington 32–0. They survived Cornwall 22–21 on the road. Then they went to Minisink Valley and produced another shutout.

Through three games, Middletown has scored 81 points and allowed 21.

That is a 3–0 start built on a defense allowing just seven points per game.

Next: Port Jervis at Middletown on Saturday.

Cornwall finally got the performance its record had been hiding

Cornwall 49, Monroe-Woodbury 7.

Cornwall entered Friday 0–2 after losing to Rye and then losing by one to Middletown.

The Dragons did not look like an 0–2 team Friday night.

They scored 49 and held Monroe-Woodbury to seven, producing one of the largest statement wins of Week 2.

Cornwall is only 1–2, but its scoring margin is now positive and Week 3 sends the Dragons to Newburgh.

Monroe-Woodbury has reached real urgency

The defending Class AA champion is 0–3.

The losses have come to John F. Kennedy Campus, Washingtonville and Cornwall.

Friday’s 49–7 loss was the most decisive of the three.

Now Monroe-Woodbury goes to Minisink Valley in a matchup where both teams badly need a stabilizing result.

Newburgh’s response is now two weeks long

Newburgh 48, Washingtonville 12.

Since the opening loss to Curtis, Newburgh has beaten Warwick 42–6 and Washingtonville 48–12.

That is 90 points scored and 18 allowed over two weeks.

Week 3 brings Cornwall to Academy Field.

The Game Center history currently shows Cornwall with five straight wins over Newburgh in the available series data. That makes Friday more than another early-season game.

Beacon, Goshen and Highland are also 3–0

Beacon 49, Red Hook 7.

Goshen 41, Monticello 0.

Highland 48, Rondout Valley 14.

Those were not survival wins. All three unbeaten teams won by at least 34 points.

Beacon has now scored 105 points through three games.

Goshen has allowed only 34 points through three games and posted its first shutout.

Highland has gone from a one-point opener to back-to-back 40-point performances.

Port Jervis keeps moving forward

Port Jervis 21, Marlboro 6.

Port has answered its opening loss at Waverly with wins over Minisink Valley and Marlboro.

The Raiders are 2–1 and have allowed only nine total points over those two wins.

Now comes one of the oldest rivalries on the Week 3 board: Port Jervis at Middletown.

KOT845’s Game Center currently has 52 scored meetings in the available series history, with Port Jervis leading 30–21–1 and carrying a two-game winning streak into Saturday.

Lourdes, Dover, Pawling and Millbrook strengthened their positions

Lourdes 39, Valley Central 22.

Dover 29, Spackenkill 9.

Pawling 46, Sullivan West 14.

Millbrook 46, Tri-Valley 12.

Each result matters for a different reason.

Lourdes moved to 2–1 with consecutive wins.

Dover moved to 2–0.

Pawling moved to 2–0.

Millbrook moved to 2–0.

Week 2: 17–2
Season: 41–20 (.672)

The two Week 2 misses were Warwick over Pine Bush and Sullivan West over Pawling. The O’Neill–Burke forfeit was excluded from the picks record because the game was not played.
