Pregame reference: Every Week 8 playoff path

Updated October 30, before Friday’s games. These are KOT845’s calculations from the completed league results and Section IX’s tiebreak rules. A playoff berth and a final seed are different: several teams are already in while their matchup is still undecided.

Class AA

Middletown is No. 1. Newburgh and Valley Central have clinched berths. Kingston is eliminated. Pine Bush and Monroe-Woodbury are playing for the last opening. Pine Bush clinches with a win; Monroe must win.

Weekend results Seeds behind Middletown
Newburgh wins; Pine Bush wins No. 2 Newburgh, No. 3 Pine Bush, No. 4 Valley Central.
Valley Central wins; Monroe-Woodbury wins No. 2 Valley Central, No. 3 Newburgh, No. 4 Monroe-Woodbury. Pine Bush is out.
Valley Central wins; Pine Bush wins All three finish 3–2. A VC win by 1–3 points gives No. 2 to Newburgh, No. 3 to Pine Bush and No. 4 to VC. A VC win by 5 or more gives No. 2 to VC, No. 3 to Newburgh and No. 4 to Pine Bush. A four-point VC win reaches the cumulative-points tiebreak.
Newburgh wins; Monroe-Woodbury wins Newburgh is No. 2. A Monroe win by 1–3 points leaves Pine Bush No. 3 and VC No. 4, with Monroe out. A Monroe win by 5 or more puts VC No. 3 and Monroe No. 4, with Pine Bush out. A four-point Monroe win reaches the cumulative-points tiebreak for the last opening.

The key numbers: Pine Bush beat VC by four; VC beat Monroe by five. In a three-team tie, only losses to the other tied teams enter the first points test, capped at 21 per loss. The process restarts after a place is awarded. At an exact four-point boundary, keep the full final scores from both relevant games for the next test.

Class A · Division 1

Washingtonville is No. 1. Warwick at Minisink Valley is winner-in, loser-out for No. 2. FDR is eliminated. Washingtonville hosts the A-2 runner-up; the Warwick–Minisink winner visits the A-2 champion in the semifinals.

Class A · Division 2

Cornwall clinches with a win. Lourdes clinches with a win. Wallkill is eliminated. Goshen can qualify with a win or through a three-way tie after a loss.

Friday results A-2 playoff outcome
Cornwall wins; Lourdes wins No. 1 Cornwall, No. 2 Lourdes. Goshen is out.
Goshen wins; Wallkill wins No. 1 Goshen, No. 2 Cornwall. Lourdes is out.
Goshen wins; Lourdes wins Three teams finish 2–1. A one-point Goshen win gives Cornwall No. 1 and Lourdes No. 2. A Goshen win by three or more gives Lourdes No. 1 and Goshen No. 2 after the head-to-head restart. A two-point Goshen win reaches the cumulative-points tiebreak; Lourdes still has a berth.
Cornwall wins; Wallkill wins Cornwall is No. 1. A Wallkill win by 1–7 points gives Lourdes No. 2; a Wallkill win by nine or more gives Goshen No. 2. An eight-point Wallkill win reaches the cumulative-points tiebreak between Goshen and Lourdes.

Why Wallkill is out: in the possible 1–2 tie, Wallkill carries a capped 21-point loss to Goshen while Goshen carries an eight-point loss to Lourdes. Wallkill cannot win the remaining playoff place. In the possible 2–1 tie, Lourdes carries a two-point loss to Cornwall and Goshen an eight-point loss to Lourdes.

Class B

No. 1 Port Jervis and No. 2 Beacon are locked in. Marlboro–Saugerties decides No. 3 and No. 4: the winner visits Beacon and the loser visits Port in the semifinals. Class C

No. 1 Highland has the semifinal bye. No. 3 Dover visits No. 2 O’Neill in the semifinal. Rondout Valley and Spackenkill are eliminated. Burke’s 41–6 win over Dover changes Dover’s overall record to 5–3; it does not change the Class C seeds.
