Valley Central Is 4–1. Is It Ready to Close the Gap on Middletown?

VC has earned four wins. Friday tests whether the Vikings can turn that progress into a win over unbeaten Middletown.

Friday result: Middletown 29, Valley Central 7. Middletown improved to 6–0 and Valley Central fell to 4–2. Next Friday brings Newburgh to Middletown and Monroe-Woodbury to Valley Central.

Original pregame analysis

Valley Central has earned the right to make Friday interesting. Now the Vikings have to make it difficult for Middletown.

At 4–1, VC visits the unbeaten Middies on Friday, October 9, at 6 p.m. Last year, Middletown won this matchup 36–14. The question this week is whether the Vikings have improved enough to change the result.

A good record gets a team into the conversation. A win over KOT845’s No. 1 team would give VC a much stronger argument.

The recent history gives VC something to change

Middletown won 42–14 in 2023, 27–13 in 2024 and 36–14 in 2025. That is three wins by a combined 105–41, with margins of 28, 14 and 22 points.

That is the gap I want to see VC close. The Vikings have earned their 4–1 record. But can they make Middletown play a fourth quarter in which every possession matters? Can they turn the conversation around this team into a result against the section’s top-ranked program?

Two good records, different defensive numbers

Team Record Points scored Points allowed Scoring average Allowed average
Middletown 5–0 137 41 27.4 8.2
Valley Central 4–1 129 92 25.8 18.4

Through five games, before Week 5. Averages are points per game; totals include non-league games.

The offenses are separated by only eight total points through five games. The defenses are separated by 51 points allowed. Different opponents matter, so those numbers do not predict Friday’s score. They do explain why I am leaning on Middletown’s defense for this pick.

The wins matter. So does the next test.

The Vikings opened by beating Yorktown 21–14 and Wallkill 32–25. After a 39–22 loss to Lourdes, they responded with wins over FDR, 34–7, and Kingston, 20–7. They arrive with two straight wins and a 1–0 Class AA record.

That is a solid body of work. Friday asks a different question: can VC sustain offense against a team that has allowed 41 points in five games?

Middletown has shut out Arlington and Minisink, survived a one-point game at Cornwall, and beaten Port Jervis and Pine Bush. The Middies have already won through several different kinds of games. VC has to make them uncomfortable and then keep them there.

What would closing the gap look like?

Watch whether VC can stay ahead of the chains. A few productive early downs would give the Vikings options; repeated long-yardage situations would let Middletown’s defense dictate how possessions end. That is a matchup question to watch, rather than a conclusion we can draw before kickoff.

Then watch the response to Middletown’s first scoring drive. Can VC answer with points or a possession that changes field position? Can its defense get the ball back without allowing the game to separate?

The strongest sign of progress would be meaningful possessions in the fourth quarter, with the outcome still in question. Winning those possessions would turn progress into a statement.

Middletown has to earn another week at the top

For the Middies, Newburgh is on next week’s schedule. VC is on this week’s field. The Vikings have done enough to deserve Middletown’s full attention.

Coach I’s pick: Middletown. I am going with the defense. Two shutouts, 41 points allowed and five wins give the Middies a strong case. But VC is not coming in here without an argument. It has won four games, handled Kingston last week and put itself in position to make this one matter.

If VC can finish drives, get stops after Middletown scores and stay in this into the fourth quarter, we have a game. If the Vikings win it, they leave 2–0 in division play with a result that changes how we have to talk about them.

Is Valley Central ready to close the gap? Friday gives the Vikings a chance to answer with a result.
