Middletown Is 6–0. Newburgh Is 5–1. The Comparison Now Moves Onto the Field.

Middletown has allowed 48 points in six games. Newburgh has outscored five Section IX opponents 207–38. They meet Friday, October 16, at 6 p.m., with Class AA playoff stakes.

Looking Ahead • Friday, October 16 • Scheduled kickoff: 6 p.m.

Middletown and Newburgh come off convincing Week 5 wins. The unbeaten Middies beat Valley Central 29–7. Newburgh won 48–13 at Pine Bush. The top two teams in the KOT845 Power 40 meet Friday, October 16, in Middletown.

There is enough evidence to make this a major Class AA game without getting ahead of the result. Middletown is 6–0. Newburgh is 5–1, with five straight wins since its opener against Curtis.

Middletown’s points allowed are the starting point

Middletown has scored 166 points and allowed 48 across six games. That is eight points allowed per game, including shutouts of Arlington and Minisink Valley.

Cornwall scored 21 in Middletown’s one-point road win. Every other opponent has finished at 13 or fewer: Arlington 0, Minisink 0, Port Jervis 7, Pine Bush 13 and Valley Central 7.

The team results give Middletown a strong foundation. Friday’s next question is what happens when that scoring resistance meets Newburgh’s offense.

Newburgh’s Section IX run has been emphatic

Since losing 35–28 to Curtis, Newburgh has beaten Warwick 42–6, Washingtonville 48–12, Cornwall 31–0, Monroe-Woodbury 38–7 and Pine Bush 48–13.

Across those five Section IX games, the Goldbacks have scored 207 points and allowed 38. They have won each by at least 31 points. Their full six-game totals are 235 scored and 73 allowed.

Middletown’s unbeaten record and Newburgh’s recent margins give both teams a clear case. This is the meeting that allows those cases to be tested against each other.

Two shared opponents, two useful reference points

Opponent Middletown result Newburgh result
Cornwall Won 22–21 Won 31–0
Pine Bush Won 28–13 Won 48–13

Newburgh has the larger margin against both. That is relevant evidence, but it does not predict the score of a direct meeting. These games happened on different dates and in different settings.

The questions for Friday are straightforward: can Middletown keep Newburgh below its recent scoring pace, and can the Middies produce enough points against a team that has held each of its five Section IX opponents to 13 or fewer?

What Friday can clinch

Both teams enter 2–0 in Class AA qualifying games. Middletown’s class wins came against Pine Bush and Valley Central; Newburgh’s came against Monroe-Woodbury and Pine Bush. Friday gives one team its third class win and the other its first class loss.

In KOT845’s qualification calculation, Middletown secures a playoff place by beating Newburgh if either Pine Bush beats Kingston or Monroe-Woodbury beats Valley Central. Newburgh secures a place by beating Middletown if either Valley Central beats Monroe-Woodbury or Pine Bush beats Kingston. Those are sufficient win-plus-help conditions, not automatic elimination scenarios for the loser.

A playoff berth still leaves a semifinal to win before either team can reach the championship. The Power 40 order—Middletown first, Newburgh second—is separate from the qualifying standings.

Playoff conditions checked October 15 using completed results through October 10. Final eligibility and seeds remain Section IX decisions.
