Middletown has answered every question through five games.
Friday brings another one.
No. 1 Middletown (5-0) hosts No. 7 Valley Central (4-1) at 6 p.m. Friday, October 9, at Middletown High School in one of the most important Class AA games on the Week 5 schedule.

Two teams that have earned their records differently
Middletown enters Week 5 unbeaten and on a five-game winning streak. The Middies are averaging 27.4 points per game while allowing just 8.2.
Valley Central has won two straight and is scoring 25.8 points per game while allowing 18.4.
Both teams won again in Week 4. Middletown went on the road and beat Pine Bush 28-13. Valley Central beat Kingston 20-7.
The records are close. The path here has not been identical. Friday gives both teams another chance to prove where they belong in the AA race.

Why Friday matters now
History is useful. It does not play the game.
Valley Central comes in 4-1 with enough momentum to make this a current-season problem for Middletown, not simply another chapter in an old series. The Vikings have already put themselves in position to make Week 5 meaningful.
Middletown, meanwhile, has the No. 1 ranking and an unbeaten record to protect. A sixth straight win would keep the Middies in control of the conversation at the top of Class AA heading toward the back half of October.
A Valley Central win would change that conversation immediately.
The next stretch does not get easier
Week 5 is not an isolated checkpoint for Middletown. Newburgh Free Academy comes to Middletown in Week 6, Monroe-Woodbury follows in Week 7, and the Middies close the regular-season schedule at Kingston.
That makes Friday the beginning of a stretch that can define the entire AA picture.
