Friday night delivered the kind of results that force a fresh look at Section IX football. Middletown beat Newburgh Free Academy in the week’s headline matchup, Port Jervis handed Beacon its first loss, and Valley Central outlasted Monroe-Woodbury in a defensive battle. The weekend isn’t finished, either: Saturday’s Class A matchups still have plenty to say about the postseason picture.
Middletown wins the showdown with Newburgh
Middletown emerged with a 32–22 win over Newburgh Free Academy, keeping its unbeaten season intact. The Middies faced a fourth-quarter deficit after a roughing-the-kicker penalty extended a Newburgh possession, but closed the game with a decisive response. It’s a significant result in the Class AA race: Middletown now owns the head-to-head victory over its biggest challenger.
Port Jervis answers Beacon
Port Jervis beat Beacon 24–14 at Glennette Field, ending Beacon’s 6–0 start. The result is an important reminder of just how demanding the Class B race can be. Beacon had built its record with an explosive offense, but Port Jervis got the result in the matchup that mattered Friday.
Valley Central and Warwick make statements
Valley Central held off Monroe-Woodbury 12–7 in a Class AA matchup, while Warwick blanked Franklin D. Roosevelt 26–0 for its first victory of the season. Valley Central’s win keeps it firmly in the AA conversation; Warwick’s result gives the Wildcats a meaningful response after a difficult first six games.
