The Morning After: Week 1 Changed the Early Section IX Order

Middletown survived Cornwall, Washingtonville knocked off Monroe-Woodbury, Port Jervis handled Minisink Valley and Newburgh answered in a big way. Week 1 changed the early Section IX football picture.

Week 1 gave Section IX football something Week 0 could not:

Results against one another.

That matters.

Non-league openers can show us talent, speed and early strengths. Week 1 began telling us how the local pecking order actually fits together.

Middletown won at Cornwall. Washingtonville beat Monroe-Woodbury. Port Jervis controlled Minisink Valley. Newburgh responded with a dominant road win at Warwick. Beacon won a one-score game at O’Neill. Goshen survived Kingston.

This is The Morning After — what Week 1 changed and what it set up next.

Middletown left Cornwall with the result of the week

Middletown 22, Cornwall 21.

One point. On the road. Against one of the section’s most established programs.

Middletown followed its 32–0 opening win over Arlington by proving it could win a completely different type of game. The Middies did not need another runaway. They needed one final possession, a late touchdown and the two-point conversion that put them in front with 25 seconds remaining.

That moved Middletown to 2–0 and changed the top of the KOT845 board entering Week 2.

Washingtonville made its 2–0 start impossible to dismiss

Washingtonville 17, Monroe-Woodbury 14.

The Wizards opened with a comeback win over Lourdes and followed it by beating the defending Class AA champion.

Two weeks. Two meaningful wins.

Washingtonville was no longer simply an interesting early-season team. It had a résumé.

Port Jervis delivered the week’s clearest statement

Port Jervis 31, Minisink Valley 3.

After opening with a loss at Waverly, Port returned to Section IX play and controlled a Minisink program that entered the season as a defending champion.

Holding Minisink to three points was as important as scoring 31. Port left Week 1 at 1–1 with a result strong enough to reset the conversation around its season.

Newburgh answered immediately

Newburgh Free Academy 42, Warwick 6.

The Goldbacks had opened with a seven-point loss to Curtis. Week 1 looked completely different.

Newburgh scored 42, allowed six and left Warwick with the type of performance expected from a team that entered the year in the championship conversation.

Lourdes, Valley Central and Beacon all strengthened their cases

Our Lady of Lourdes 53, Pine Bush 12.

Valley Central 32, Wallkill 25.

Beacon 29, O’Neill 22.

Lourdes bounced back from its opening loss with the biggest offensive total of the week among the section’s 11-man teams.

Valley Central moved to 2–0 by winning another competitive game.

Beacon also moved to 2–0 after winning a seven-point game at O’Neill.

By the end of the week, the middle of the Section IX board had become considerably more crowded.

Week 1 also created urgency

Monroe-Woodbury fell to 0–2.

Cornwall fell to 0–2.

Warwick fell to 0–2.

Wallkill fell to 0–2 despite losing its first two games by a combined eight points.

Minisink Valley went from a Week 0 road win to a 28-point loss.

Those records did not decide anyone’s season. They did make Week 2 much more important.
