By Week 5, the schedule starts doing more than producing wins and losses.
It starts moving the playoff picture.
Not every game this week is an elimination game, and the Section IX tiebreak system means one result never tells the entire story. But several Week 5 matchups can change qualifying records, cut-line pressure and the order teams carry into the second half of October.
Track the live Section IX standings and tiebreak picture throughout the weekend.
Valley Central at Middletown
Middletown is 5-0. Valley Central is 4-1.
That alone makes Friday one of the biggest Class AA games on the board.
Middletown has the No. 1 Power 40 spot and an unbeaten record. Valley Central has won four of five and gets a direct opportunity to change how the top of AA looks before the next stretch begins.
Newburgh Free Academy at Pine Bush
Newburgh is 4-1 and coming off a 38-7 win over Monroe-Woodbury. Pine Bush is 1-4, but the Bushmen were competitive with Middletown in Week 4 before falling 28-13.
For Newburgh, this is another chance to keep pace in AA. For Pine Bush, it is a direct opportunity to improve its position with the season moving into its second half.
Kingston at Monroe-Woodbury
Monroe-Woodbury enters Week 5 0-5. Kingston is 2-3.
That makes this one important for two different reasons. Kingston has a chance to strengthen its place in the AA race. Monroe-Woodbury needs a result that stops the season from getting away completely.
The Crusaders have already been through a brutal early schedule. Friday gives them a home chance to change the tone.
Wallkill at Washingtonville
Washingtonville is 4-1 after beating previously unbeaten Goshen 37-7. Wallkill is 3-2 after a 21-7 win over FDR.
This is one of the clearest Class A separation games of the weekend.
Washingtonville can keep building distance. Wallkill can pull the race back toward itself.
Minisink Valley at Our Lady of Lourdes
Lourdes is 4-1. Minisink is 2-3.
The Warriors have been one of Section IX’s highest-scoring teams over the last month. Minisink is coming off a 49-20 loss to Cornwall and needs a response.
A Lourdes win would strengthen an already strong Class A position. A Minisink win would immediately tighten the middle of the race.
James I. O’Neill at Spackenkill
O’Neill is 3-2. Spackenkill is 2-3.
O’Neill beat Rondout Valley 23-8 in Week 4. Spackenkill lost 31-25 to Chester after giving up the lead late.
With both teams sitting in the middle of the Class C conversation, Friday provides a direct chance for one to gain separation and the other to feel significantly more pressure entering Week 6.
Burke Catholic at Chester
Saturday brings another game worth watching closely.
Burke Catholic enters Week 5 unbeaten after reaching 5-0. Chester just beat Spackenkill 31-25 with a fourth-quarter comeback.
Whatever the standings look like entering Saturday, this is the kind of result that can reshape the conversation around the smaller-school playoff races immediately.
Why Week 5 matters
The standings are no longer theoretical. Teams have enough results on the board for every qualifying win and loss to start carrying more weight.
That does not mean the bracket is set. It means the margin for error is shrinking.
