Four Weeks to Winter: What Section IX Basketball Families Should Know Before November 16

Winter practice opens November 16. Here is what to check now, how to follow the schedule and why last March’s results are only a starting point.

Football still has playoff races to settle. Basketball families have a date to circle, too: Monday, November 16, the official NYSPHSAA winter start date for 2026–27. As of October 19, that leaves four weeks before the season’s first official practices.

That date begins the season. Each school sets its own tryout sessions, locations and registration process. A statewide start date does not tell a player which gym to report to or whether the athletic office has cleared the paperwork.

Start with the school, then check the calendar

Players and parents should check the district’s athletics page for registration instructions, required health documentation and the school’s tryout notice. If a time or location has not been announced, ask the athletic office rather than relying on last year’s arrangements. Modified teams can operate on a different calendar.

The first useful basketball task this month is getting those details settled. The second is understanding the difference between a practice, a scrimmage and a game. They can all appear on school calendars; they do not all belong in a team’s competitive record.

Last March gives us a starting point

Kingston, Goshen, Beacon, Onteora, Mount Academy and Chapel Field finished the 2025–26 season as Section IX’s champions in Classes AAA through D. Those results tell us who held the trophies last spring. They do not settle the coming winter’s rankings or tell us which players will fill the rotation.

We will have a clearer picture once school rosters and current coaching appointments are confirmed. Until then, a preseason preview should explain a program’s recent results without treating a past all-star list as a returning lineup.

Follow the week, then the matchup

The KOT845 basketball schedule groups games by week and date. Each matchup has a separate Game Center, while the team directory leads to school pages with schedules, coverage and program history. Dates can change, especially around tournaments, so check the linked school source before traveling.

The wider winter sports hub connects the other winter desks. We are keeping the fall postseason accessible while basketball and the rest of winter move toward opening practice.

For coaches and athletic departments, a dated school schedule or published roster is the most useful update to send now. It gives families something concrete to plan around and helps us keep the coverage accurate as November approaches.

School-specific basketball partnerships can be discussed through the advertising page. Campaign details are confirmed before booking.
