Burke’s 2011 State Title: Four Wins That Still Belong in the Section IX Conversation

Albertus Magnus, Mattituck, Westhill and Potsdam stood between Burke Catholic and the 2011 Class B state championship. The Eagles beat all four.

Burke Catholic’s 2011 Class B state championship can be reduced to one final score: 62–52 over Potsdam. The better way to remember it is as a four-game run, with each victory asking the Eagles to take another step beyond Section IX.

The NYSPHSAA bracket lists Burke at 19–2 entering regional play and 23–2 after the championship game. Between those records are wins over Albertus Magnus, Mattituck, Westhill and Potsdam. The sequence is a useful reminder of how much basketball sits behind the words “state champion.”

Regional play established the route

Burke opened with a 75–65 regional-semifinal victory over Albertus Magnus. Next came a 75–59 win over Mattituck in the regional final. Two straight 75-point performances sent the Eagles to the state semifinals.

The margins were different, but the result was the same: Burke advanced. The Eagles had moved from a sectional championship to the final weekend, where a win no longer meant another regional assignment. It meant a chance to play for the state title.

Westhill supplied the closest test

Burke beat Westhill 63–58 in the state semifinal. The five-point margin was the narrowest of the Eagles’ four NYSPHSAA tournament wins. After victories by 10 and 16 points in the regionals, the Eagles had to get through a closer game to reach the final.

That distinction matters when looking back at the run. A championship team’s most revealing result is not always its most comfortable victory. The Westhill game was the smallest numerical separation between Burke and the end of its state-title pursuit.

The finish against Potsdam

The Eagles completed the job with the 62–52 championship victory over Potsdam. Burke had won all four games in its NYSPHSAA tournament run, and the state-final record stood at 23–2.

The team preparing for the coming winter has its own season to play. This result belongs to 2011, in the classification Burke held that year. Its place in the program’s history is secure without using it to predict the next roster’s results.

The Burke Catholic program page now keeps that championship route alongside the school’s schedule and other historical entries. Visit the 2011 school archive for more.
