Newburgh Just Ended a 17-Year Drought. Now 0–4 Monroe-Woodbury Comes to Academy Field.

Newburgh enters Week 4 at 3-1 after shutting out Cornwall. Monroe-Woodbury arrives 0-4 with a divisional game that can change the feel of its season.

Newburgh spent 17 years trying to beat Cornwall again. On Friday night, the Goldbacks did more than end the drought — they shut Cornwall out 31-0.

One week later, the assignment changes completely.

Monroe-Woodbury comes to Newburgh Free Academy on Friday at 0-4. Newburgh enters at 3-1 and has won three straight games since its opening loss to Curtis.

Newburgh’s last three games have looked different

The Goldbacks beat Warwick 42-6, Washingtonville 48-12 and Cornwall 31-0. Across those three wins, Newburgh has scored 121 points and allowed 18.

The Cornwall result was the biggest statement yet. Newburgh led 17-0 at halftime and finished the night without allowing a point, ending a series drought that dated to September 25, 2009.

That performance moves Newburgh into Week 4 with momentum and a home game to open October.

Monroe-Woodbury is trying to stop the slide

Monroe-Woodbury’s 21-6 loss to Minisink Valley dropped the Crusaders to 0-4. An early turnover gave Minisink a short field, and the Warriors controlled the game from there. The week before, Cornwall beat Monroe 49-7. Newburgh then beat Cornwall 31-0. Those scores do not predict Friday’s margin, but they show why this is such a difficult spot for a Crusaders team still searching for its first win.

At 0-4, the urgency is obvious. But Week 4 is also a divisional opportunity, and Monroe-Woodbury does not need to fix the entire first month in one night. It needs to be better on Friday than it was the week before.

That is what makes this matchup interesting: one team is coming off one of its most important regular-season wins in years, while the other is trying to prevent September from defining its October.
