Middletown answered the biggest question on its schedule by beating Newburgh. The Middies are 7–0 overall, 3–0 in qualifying Class AA games and have secured a playoff place in KOT845’s current race calculation. Their next assignment is Monroe-Woodbury at home on Friday, October 23.
That leaves a useful distinction for the week ahead. Middletown has earned a place in the field. The remaining games still affect its position in that field. Monroe-Woodbury arrives with its own qualifying race to navigate, regardless of how different the overall records look.
Monroe’s overall record does not tell the whole playoff story
The Crusaders are 1–6 overall but 1–2 in Class AA. AA sends four of its six teams to the postseason, and the qualifying table counts games within the class. Through October 17, Monroe occupies the current fourth position in KOT845’s table. That is a place today, not a final seed.
Pine Bush is also 1–2 in qualifying play. Kingston is 0–3. Newburgh and Valley Central are both 2–1, while Middletown leads at 3–0. Each AA team still has two qualifying games on the stored schedule. Friday’s game belongs in that full picture rather than being reduced to a comparison of 7–0 and 1–6.
A win over Newburgh raises the next assignment
Middletown’s case before the Newburgh game rested on its unbeaten record and the work that put it at the top of KOT845’s rankings. The Middies then added the direct result against the Goldbacks. Continuing that standard means bringing the same attention to an opponent whose season has been much more difficult.
Monroe is also the program that won the last two Class AA championships. Those titles do not award the Crusaders a place in this year’s field, but they explain why this matchup has more context than the current overall records alone provide.
Three games affect the same race
Kingston visits Newburgh on Friday. Valley Central visits Pine Bush on Saturday. Together with Monroe at Middletown, those games give all six AA teams another qualifying result in the same weekend.
For the teams near the cutoff, a favorable result elsewhere can matter alongside their own performance. For the teams near the top, the remaining head-to-head games and tiebreak sequence still matter to positioning. KOT845’s table leaves Newburgh and Valley Central tied where the current evidence does not resolve their order.
That is why an automatic elimination or clinching claim should follow the complete qualifying calculation. A team can improve its situation without guaranteeing a place, and a poor overall record does not by itself establish elimination.
