The 500-Win Club: Four Local Programs Connected to New York’s Coaching List

Rod Chando, Sam Kalloch, Jerry Kaplan and James Santoro connect four local programs to the state history archive’s through-2026 career-win list.

Five hundred wins is a career’s worth of basketball. It represents far more than one strong class or one postseason run, which is why New York’s historical coaching list gives those totals a place of their own.

Four local program connections appear in the archive’s list headed through 2026: Rod Chando at Red Hook, Sam Kalloch at Poughkeepsie, Jerry Kaplan at James I. O’Neill and James Santoro at Our Lady of Lourdes. Their listed totals range from 514 to 626 victories.

A different measure from a championship

A sectional or state title tells us what a team achieved in a particular season. A career win total asks a different question: what did a coach accumulate across the years covered by the record? Both belong in a program’s history, but they should not be treated as interchangeable.

The scale is worth pausing on. Twenty wins a season for 25 seasons would produce exactly 500. That is an illustration of the milestone’s size, not a claim that any of these coaches followed that exact path. Their individual seasons and careers deserve to be documented on their own terms.

Keep the record attached to its source

The state history archive credits the New York State Sportswriters Association for most of the data and invites corrections. KOT845 is retaining its through-2026 cutoff and its school labels. These are the career totals reported by that source; they are not newly calculated totals from a complete KOT845 game database.

The distinction also matters when reading a current team page. A coach’s place in a historical list does not, by itself, establish who holds that school’s job for 2026–27. Career history and current appointments need their own dated sources.

Four programs, more history to preserve

For Red Hook, Poughkeepsie, O’Neill and Lourdes, these entries provide another way into the program archive. They also give us specific careers to research more deeply, season by season, rather than stopping at a single number.

The KOT845 coaching-wins page now includes all 58 entries in the supplied statewide list, with the four Section IX school connections identified separately.
