Some programs are defending championships. Others are replacing proven quarterbacks, adjusting to new leadership, rebuilding around younger rosters, or trying to break through after years of being close.

1. Can Monroe-Woodbury Win a Third Straight Section IX Championship?
Monroe-Woodbury enters 2026 carrying the expectations that come with back-to-back sectional titles.
The Crusaders have established themselves as the current standard in Class AA, but defending a championship is difficult. Winning three straight requires more than talent. It demands roster continuity, leadership, depth, and the ability to handle every opponent’s best effort.
The biggest question is whether Monroe-Woodbury can maintain its position while replacing key production and navigating another demanding schedule.
2. Who Becomes the Next Quarterback at Port Jervis?
Port Jervis has experienced an extraordinary run under head coach Damien Striharsky.
The program won six straight Section IX championships from 2019 through 2024 and reached its peak with the 2024 Class B state championship.
That run featured championship-level quarterback play from Brett Fuller and Dylan Fox. One helped establish the standard. The other elevated it to the state level.
Now Port Jervis enters unfamiliar territory.
For the first time in years, the Raiders must identify the quarterback capable of protecting that standard and leading the next phase of the program.

5. Which New Head Coach Will Make the Biggest Immediate Impact?
Several programs enter 2026 with new leadership or significant coaching changes.
New coaches can reshape a program quickly through culture, organization, scheme, offseason participation, and player development.
But immediate success depends on more than installing a new offense or defense. It requires earning trust, building staff chemistry, developing depth, and establishing clear expectations.
Valley Central and other programs undergoing transitions will be worth watching closely.
6. Who Is the Biggest Sleeper Program?

Section IX football is shaped by rivalry games with history, emotion, and community significance.
Port Jervis and Middletown compete for the Erie Bell. Goshen and Warwick play for the Spirit Trophy. Cornwall and Minisink continue to produce one of the region’s most important modern matchups.
There will also be divisional games that become rivalries because of championship consequences.
