2023 Section IX Boys Basketball Season

The 2023 season record preserves five Section IX championship classes and their NYSPHSAA paths. Chapel Field produced the defining run, reaching the Class D state championship game.

State result: Chapel Field went 3–1 in the state tournament and finished as NYSPHSAA Class D runner-up. Newburgh also won a state subregional; Goshen, Burke Catholic and Rhinebeck were eliminated in their first or next state round.

A Goshen Goshen 64, Our Lady of Lourdes 52 After a first-round bye, lost to Tappan Zee 54–46 in the state quarterfinal.
B Burke Catholic Burke Catholic 56, O’Neill 45 Lost to Valhalla 70–56 in the state subregional.
C Rhinebeck Rhinebeck 47, Pine Plains 32 Lost to Haldane 65–47 in the state first round.
D Chapel Field Chapel Field 60, Roscoe 42 Beat Bridgehampton 58–53, South Kortright 68–58 and North Warren 47–46; lost to Avoca-Prattsburgh 70–48 in the state championship.

History Notes

Chapel Field state runner-up Chapel Field reached the NYSPHSAA Class D championship game, the deepest Section IX boys basketball state run in the current 2020–26 archive window.
Newburgh three-peat Newburgh’s 52–42 win over Middletown secured a third consecutive Section IX championship.
Rhinebeck breakthrough Rhinebeck’s Class C title was its first Section IX boys basketball championship since 2001.
